Generic term referring to the application of a different metal to the surface of a bronze sculpture by a variety of means (mechanical, chemical, electrochemical). Typically, gold and silver are used to plate sculptures, however metals such as nickel, zinc and tin have been used either for aesthetic or protective reasons. When the applied metal is gold or an alloy of gold it is referred to as ‘gilding.’
