Definition

Refers to the surface immediately after removal from the mold, including fire skin and adhered investment. The term may be used to describe the cast before chasing, with the raw translation of the model’s surface amidst an incompletely fettled, repaired or chased surface. The as-cast surface may retain such features as investment material, flashes, or unrepaired flaws, yet may have been deemed complete by the artist or foundry.
