Metallurgical join

Definition

A type of join between two metal parts that is undertaken using molten metal. Examples of metallurgical joins include those made using welding, brazing, soldering, and interlock casting.

Note: The correct use of this term has been disputed among CASTING members but it is often used as a general term to distinguish from mechanical joins. Diffusion welding (an expensive 20th C. solid-state welding technique) does not involve the use of molten metal but to our knowledge is not used for bronze sculpture.
